The NOISE! It even has a bit of an air-cooled-ness about it. V8s are my favorite sounding engines, followed by V12s, but Porsche's flat-six holds a special place in my heart, and this one is an absolute winner.

That is an amazing sound. Props to the driver for staying well within the limits of the road. He's clearly backing off whenever there's a crest big enough to obscure a potential crossroad or driveway. That's how you do fun country road driving.

51 seconds in, did anyone notice the tire pressure difference on the rear tires? Probably not a huge deal, but it caught my eye. Great sounding engine regardless.
Also, orange wheels and graphics over powder blue are ugly. It's ugly on a Honda Civic, it's a ugly on a race car, and it's ugly on this Porsche.

I recently saw a head to head between a Ferrari F12, a 911 (GT3?) and an SLS Black series. So, in essense it had all your favorite engine notes, the V12, the V8 and a Porsche boxer. But I must say, I would never choose a V8 over that delicious Enzo V12 roar coming from that F12.

This thing is boner-inducing. Awesome car and one of my favorite colors. Although, I've never been a fan of the extra stickers on the RS over the GT3 (Minor nit).

Hate to break it to you, but it's just not going to happen with your motor - anywhere near stock internals. Flat plane crank, high compression forged pistons, titanium connecting rods, etc. That's not even taking into account the engine layout and special exhaust tuning in the P car.
That said, I think the sound from the 350/370 is one of its better attributes.

![]() 02/23/2014 at 12:53 |

Flat 6s don't have flat plane cranks. Not sure how titanium conrods change engine sound... can you explain? Also, most hi po Porsches have dual exhaust streams, essentially making the exhaust turn the motor into 2 3 cylinders. The Z can be the same with a true dual exhaust. In fact, Zs with dual exhausts sound a lot like low end 911s. It's doable.

The 1989-1991 Ford Taurus SHO had a Yamaha V6 in it. Yamaha helped out with the last generation Lexus IS-F and pretty much made the entire engine in the Lexus LF-A. These are just the cars I know off the top of my head. Yamaha knows how to make great engines and for lower volume cars and or smaller car companies it makes sense to have another company produce your engine. If you want to go even futher, Lotus uses Toyota engines and even the McLaren F1 used a BMW V12. Pagani uses AMG engines.
Edit: I just looked it up, and the Yamaha V8 was used initially in the Volvo XC-90, and then later the S80. It's use has been discontinued by Volvo production cars, but supposedly a 5.0 L version is being used in their V8 Supecars race cars. Uniquely, it has a 60 degree cylinder bank like a V6. This probably has a lot to do with how the engine sounds.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 13:11 |

Hey you don't have to tell me yamaha makes great motors, I own one!
Just really surprised it would be cheaper for volvo to hire a firm to design one than to do it in house. Lotus, McLaren et al I could understand. C4 ZR1 comes to mind as well.

I've always been really impressed with how much power these outboards make in such relatively compact packages. Makes me wonder what would happen if someone (properly) rigged one into a Miata. They aren't exactly revvy engines though, now are they?

Sadly, turbos usually ruin the sound of the Porsche flat six. Just look at the 911 Turbo and GT2. All you get from those is a "whoosh" sound. I'm not saying it isn't possible for them to sound good with turbo's, but they usually don't.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 16:46 |
|
Not at all. I believe mine redlines at 4200ish, although unlike a car you have to be able to run at that rpm for a very extended amount of time. Also you have to remember they are built with unlimited cooling (cold water impeller) in mind.
Someone is marketing an outboard that is essentially (exactly?) a cadillac CTS-V motor with 560hp and everything. Last year they were $70,000 EACH!
![]() 02/23/2014 at 16:57 |

![]() 02/23/2014 at 17:07 |

I wouldn't call 4200 rpm out of a V6 revvy. Compared to a car engine that's very low. I'm sure these could rev higher, but not sustainably for extended periods of time, as you say. It's like a lawnmower engine. Sure, they could probably rev higher without issues, but not for very long. Also, I own an old Sea Ray 180 inboard/outboard from 1999-ish. The Mercruiser engine in that. Yikes. To call it hesitant and finicky would be an understatement. It makes waterskiing difficult. Ease into the throttle and you get nothing...nothing...nothing...SURGE! But she gets me around alright.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 17:26 |

lol, yeah, I was agreeing with you. You said they were not very revy, I replied, no not at all (revy)
![]() 02/23/2014 at 17:54 |

I believe the engine started off as the the 1996+ Ford Taurus SHO V8 and was bored and stroked for Volvo for use in the XC90 during the Ford/Volvo years.

Howabought the sound of a much more affordable V6? A VR6 to be exact.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 21:13 |
|
Sorry, but I'm just not a fan of the noise V6's make, unless they're Honda V6's. And it's not that I'm a Honda fanboy, just that their V6's have a great intake noise.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 21:19 |
|
It's supercharged with a full exhaust all the way back: Stillen Headers, Motordyne ART Pipes (straight pipes with attached resonance chambers), and Motordyne true dual exhaust.
The "tinny" sound you might be hearing is probably more a product of the sound capturing than the actual exhaust note, I think. Really, it's just *that* loud at WOT. I've struggled mightily to find a good way to record it so that it captures the bass along with that sound, but to little avail. In-person, it just screams like bloody murder.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 21:38 |

I wish I had mine on camera, GoPro doesn't capture great sound. I've got an 08 TL Type-S with the RV6 high flow pre-cats and catless J-Pipe and a megan racing full cat back. Mine sounds great but not race car loud. I tried to avoid the tinny sound I had with my former car, RSX with a long-tube exhaust, no cat and greddy evo2. Budget but awesome for a 19yr old. lol

Oh, no problem. There are many better sounding VR6 clips out there but not many that aren't turbo. I was just looking for something under WOT like the Porsche. I have always like the intake sound of the Audi 4-Cyl Turbos personally.
Jalopnik placed the VR6 in 4th.

I agree it is doable, IMO the flat 6 will always have more snarl, more growl and rasp. But like you said, not entirely impossible to get a pretty similar sound.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 11:33 |
|
You'll never get a true, GOOD engine sound that captures all the range of sound in my opinion. The inline 5 turbo on my wagon sounds deeper than a catless WRX under under 3k but in video it doesnt even sound close. That being said, I'm willing to bet your setup, with what you listed sounds ungodly haha!
![]() 02/24/2014 at 11:54 |
|
Always loved the VR6, best sound V6 IMO. I can say it is what led me into getting a Volvo because of the inline 5 turbo. Now THAT sound, has replaced the VR6 as my favorite. 3" downpipe to straight pipes.... Heaven

The VR6 in the clip in the link is kind of interesting. I'm mostly not a fan of anything that sounds like a Nissan VQ engine. They're fantastic engines, but I don't like the sound, or anything too similar.

Limited-edition car is packed with motorsport technology
ATLANTA - April 28, 2011 —- The 911 GT3 RS, one of Porsche's most popular, coveted and successful track-inspired production cars, has been given a final, thrilling injection of thoroughbred motorsport technology resulting in the 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0. Limited to 600 vehicles worldwide, the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 brings together in a sports car the attributes that have made the Porsche 911 GT3 a consistent winner on the race track.
The motorsport-derived 4.0-liter engine, already the highest displacement 911 engine ever, also features the highest per-liter output — 125 horsepower (hp) per liter — from a naturally aspirated Porsche flat-six engine. The engine uses forged pistons, the connecting rods are fashioned from titanium, and the crankshaft has been lifted unchanged from the 911 GT3 RSR race car. It achieves its maximum power of 500 hp at 8,250 rpm. Maximum torque of 339 ft/lbs is reached at 5,750 rpm.

no i said tuning a GT3 is stupid because how much it costs to tune a GT3
and for all intensive purposes the GT3 RS 4.0 is not just more power...but the best sound, best handling, performing GT3 EVER made...
so for what it cost you to tune a regular GT3 you could own a truly collectible and amazing last of a generation/era track/road/supercar. thats 1 of 500
